Indonesia is in the Southeast of Asia and has approximately 17.000 islands. Of the rather more than 235 million1 inhabitants 86%1 is Muslim and 9%1 Christian. That makes Indonesia the country with the largest number of Muslims in the world. Especially in areas like Atjeh Christians deal with difficult circumstances.
In 2008 we researched the possibilities of Christian television in Indonesia. By mandate, the national public television station in Indonesia provides free airtime for all religions. A collaborative effort led by the Indonesian Council of Churches (PGI - Persekutuan Gereja-Gereja di Indonesia) and representatives of the Protestant, Evangelical, and Roman Catholic churches in the country has been initiated to capitalize on this opportunity. 3xM has been instrumental in making this cooperative project possible.
A large part of the country cannot receive a Christian television program on this moment. On behalf of the churches in Indonesia an organization will be set up which will make the programs. TVRI, the national public station, has shown great interest in a Christian program and will air it every week on 3.30 PM starting October 5, 2008. Since 2009 broadcasting is on 2 pm. This program is supported by a large part of the Christians in Indonesia. It has a potential reach of 72% or 171 million people.
